Conditions we help with

Thyroid problems, looked at properly

We look at how your thyroid makes, converts and uses its hormones, and what is getting in the way. We work alongside your GP and specialists, never instead of them.

Underactive thyroid

When the thyroid slows down

An underactive thyroid slows almost every system in the body. Symptoms creep in gradually and are often put down to age, stress or being busy.

Hypothyroidism

The thyroid isn't making enough hormone. It is diagnosed and treated by your GP, usually with levothyroxine. We look at the factors that affect how well that treatment works.

Common signs

  • Constant tiredness
  • Weight gain
  • Feeling cold
  • Constipation and dry skin

Hashimoto's thyroiditis

The most common cause of an underactive thyroid in the UK: the immune system attacks the thyroid. Antibodies can rise for years before TSH changes.

Common signs

  • Symptoms that come and go
  • Thyroid antibodies on testing
  • Other autoimmune conditions in you or your family
  • Swelling in the neck

Subclinical hypothyroidism

TSH is mildly raised but T4 is still in range. Some people feel well; others have clear symptoms. It's worth understanding why it's happening.

Common signs

  • Tiredness and brain fog
  • Low mood
  • Feeling the cold
  • Slowly creeping weight

Still not right

Treated, or "normal", but still unwell

Many people keep their symptoms on thyroid medication, or are told their results are normal. This is where looking beyond TSH matters most.

Symptoms despite medication

Around 1 in 4 people on levothyroxine with a normal TSH still report symptoms. The cause is often outside the thyroid itself.

Common signs

  • Ongoing tiredness on a "good" dose
  • Weight that won't shift
  • Brain fog and low mood
  • Hair thinning

Please keep taking your medication. We never advise stopping or changing it without your GP.

Poor T4 to T3 conversion

Levothyroxine is T4, which the body must convert into active T3. Low nutrients, stress, inflammation, gut and liver problems can all slow that conversion.

Common signs

  • Normal TSH and T4, low or low-normal T3
  • Cold hands and feet
  • Fatigue and slow thinking
  • High reverse T3

"Normal" results, still unwell

A standard test checks TSH, and sometimes T4. It doesn't look at T3, reverse T3 or antibodies, or at the factors that affect thyroid function.

Common signs

  • Classic thyroid symptoms
  • TSH in range
  • No antibodies or T3 checked
  • No explanation offered

Life stages

Thyroid changes through life

Hormone changes in women's lives often affect the thyroid, and thyroid symptoms can overlap with menopause.

Thyroid & menopause

Perimenopause and menopause can unmask or worsen thyroid problems, and the symptoms overlap: fatigue, weight gain, low mood and poor sleep.

Common signs

  • Fatigue and weight gain
  • Low mood and anxiety
  • Poor sleep
  • Brain fog

After pregnancy

Thyroid changes after childbirth (postpartum thyroiditis) are common and can be missed among the exhaustion of a new baby.

Common signs

  • Exhaustion beyond new-parent tiredness
  • Low mood
  • Palpitations, then sluggishness
  • Weight changes

If you are pregnant or planning a pregnancy and take thyroid medication, please speak to your GP or midwife promptly, as doses often need adjusting.

Overactive thyroid

An overactive thyroid, such as Graves' disease, needs medical diagnosis and treatment by your GP and an endocrinologist. We can support you alongside that care.

Common signs

  • Racing heart and tremor
  • Weight loss
  • Anxiety and poor sleep
  • Feeling hot

A racing heart, tremor and weight loss should be checked by your GP promptly.
